Stuff can go to hell and I'm staying put.
First thing this morning, my graphics card crashed in every which way it could. For a minute, I felt tears pressing on my eyes, a wail creeping up my throat.
I have several other laptops, but they're loaded with ancient programs (CS2) and hardware that just blinks when faced with my cameras. I'm typing now on my teensy weensy cute as a bug and about as useful macbook. I can hardly see the screen but we gave away the connector that would let me use an external monitor.
No matter how hard I tried to succumb to misery, though, it wouldn't stick.
I can paint. And write. And I can jump back into Flash and see what happens. I haven't used Flash for anything but fixing clients' work for awhile and my graphics tablet is too powerful for this computer, so the pen's a bit of a loose cannon. Still, it will be interesting. That's the only choice.
In the meantime, here's something I did. The charming and uber-talented Shana posted it on Facebook, so some of you have seen it and I'm sorry for making you dodge it again. It's only right that this blog gets a little action. :)

I'm glad you're staying put!
What made your graphics card crash? Ha ha, about that cute as a bug and about as useful macbook. I used one for about a year when my mac repair person lost my computer. (He loaned me a macbook.) It was cute as a bug, and it did fine for me--though I didn't do much animation on it.
I'm glad the misery didn't stick. I want to do things that only make me happy. Is it possible?
p.s. Is that your lettering in the video?
I use a macbook. I too think it's quite cute. But hooking it up to an external monitor rocks! I've got a big 24-inch monitor that makes everything look groovier than is.
Are you going to have a memorial service for the crashed card?
Linda: Here's how it went.
MacGenius: Was there any distortion in your graphics?
Me: No.
MacGenius: (shrugs) Well. Sometimes they just do that.
I DO think it's possible to only do things that make you happy, but it depends entirely on a perspective during the doing/afterwards, not in the planning.
And that is my lettering, but it's only me re-creating his handwriting. Not so hard since mine is very similar.
Mari: Even on my macbook pro, I need to use an external. I'm using a 23 inch cinema display, though, (and have a 20 inch) and they've BOTH become too small lately. Or maybe they're just fine and it's my eyesight that's gone bad. :):)
No memorial service. I said my goodbyes and I was always grateful for its fine performance but I have to draw the line somewhere. :)
As I'm paring down projects my lone thumbs up/thumbs down factor is whether or not it makes me really happy to work on it. If I'm happy, the work is happy, people who see it will be happy etc.
For the record no one knows why I can't print landscape on my new computer. I print landscape a lot and I too am a little miffed at the computer world.
I love it. It seems like such a simple concept, but why is it so hard to remember sometimes?
Anonymose: You wrote If I'm happy, the work is happy, people who see it will be happy ...
That's a very very good plan. The best of all.
Sorry about the printer. Remember when they used to be the EASY part of the whole computing equation?
Churlita: Hm. I wonder if it's so hard to remember or just really easy to forget when you're paddling around in the middle of the happy lake. Ha.
On the one hand, my laptop, after a visit to the repair shop, no longer has a fan that sounds like a prop plane fighting a heavy headwind. On the other hand, now my speakers don't work, and I don't know when I'll have time to take it back to the shop (30 miles away from me in a direction I don't usually need to go) to get the speakers squared away.
On the other other hand, it works, which means I can work...so I kinda get where you're coming from. :)
Also, you have for some reason failed to remind me of something important which I had not actually forgotten, but which circumstances have prevented me from attending to or even emailing you to explain because my brain seems to stop working when I start the drive home from work and doesn't start again until I leave the house. And I've been paranoid about using my laptop at home due to the heavy-headwind sound. That which I had (seemingly) forgotten shall be attended to no later than Sunday.
One day soon, I hope to actually HEAR your last two animations. ***sigh***
Word v: naships. Hmmm. Nacho-carrying ships? Nah...
I really needed that little film today. I needed to remember to only do things that make me happy. Thank you!!
It also reminded me why I did a Flash course. I want to do some short animations and I love the way you do yours.
btw the only computer I have is a 13" macBook pro (& no external monitor) which is often tricky when working with graphics, but in a tiny little house, at least it doesn't take up much space :-)
Syd: Oh, your brain's had enough to contend with and it all worked out on this end. Hope it's working out on THAT end (yours), too. :)
It's surprising - and I don't like it! - how disruptive it can be when our technology fails us. I took a break, but am here to report that -at least for me - that's not the answer. :\
Ulrike: The world has a funny way of ensuring we don't always get to do happy stuff. Apparently, it's our job to MAKE it happy. Work work work. :)
A 13" screen is tricky. But only because it's hard to see your canvas. If you can work in miniature, though, I'm guessing you're still good to go. So ... GO! :)
