Figuring Out the New Stuff

Creating characters and artwork in Photoshop will one day, I hope, come much more easily to me. Right now, it's frustrating.

After a week of that frustration, I'm now guessing that other people scan in art and work of that, instead of using heavy/unwieldy paintbrushes.

My hand can't really sketch, the lines don't really flow, the paint doesn't really go where I want it to go and it doesn't work anything like actual painting, where you work it down to details from blocks of color.

The playfulness I can conjure elsewhere seems to disappear in Photoshop. I drew a fairy. I think that says it all.

So, frustration probably ought to be expected. Which is why next time, I'm doing what I think everyone else does and scanning it all in. What's the point of cheating if you're not going to cheat all the way?

That's what I say.

You mean there are other tools in Photoshop besides the healing brush (which I use to de-age photos of to upload to my Facebook)

Mimi'sDaddy: There are! Ha. I like Photoshop so much for shopping photos. Those tools are pretty dreamy. It's the other tools... They just don't want to be my pals.

Creating freehand and scanning isn't cheating. It's another tool, scanning not cheating that is, although cheating can be a tool too. I love the fairy.

Anonymust: That is some breathtaking spinning you did! Well done. :) No kidding on the fairy?

Prawda on the fairy.

Booda, hi! Have you ever tried Painter? It has a smoother feel than Photoshop.

That little cat is terrific.

O love the fairy. She looks pretty playful to me. I know nothing about Photoshop. Looks a fun, interesting challenge.

Linda: I've read people raving about Painter. I could download a trial, but then if I liked it, I'd have to buy it. :\ or :) - I can't decide.

Cats (and bunnies and dogs) are, for me, about the only easy things to do loosey. Too bad people don't look just like cats and bunnies and dogs.

Mom: Do you do any drawing or using of graphics programs? Photoshop is a very good program for what it does. But we are strange creatures, peoples, and we want our stuff to do everything we can imagine. From the right direction, I guess that CAN look fun. :):)

I'm a fan of the fair too...Whichever way you created her.

I love the fairy too. Not to jump on the bandwagon, but truly I do.

Like 'em all but I'm a bit partial to the kitty. I'm a flop when it comes to photoshop. All those layers. I once put a photo of me in PS and tried to erase my age spots and dark undereye circles. Ended up looking like a ghost from a Kurosawa movie. Oy.

Churlita and Random: There's been a LOT of talk lately about what democracy looks like, but I don't think any of it holds a CANDLE to the vote on the fairy. :):) (Really, my head's a little numb from using the phrase "holds a candle" - I didn't think that was possible.)

O, but Mari! Those layers are like the handmaids of perfection, however artificial it might be! I'm sorry you haven't mastered this. The repairs I've made ...! Sometimes, I feel like a big old scary sorceress, because it really takes some kind of magic to erase half an ass.
